HANPAN · TRACK 3

Night Patrol

순라

Track 3 of Hanpan  ·  History notes →  ·  Korean lyrics side by side →

When the injeong bell rings twenty-eight times the gates of Hanyang close, and until the paru bell rings thirty-three times the streets belong to the night patrol. A song for whoever runs and hides between the torches to cross the curfew night.

Injeong — the bell is ringing
Twenty-eight times
Shut the gates

After sunset the streets are not mine
The torch-bearers sweep the alleys
Kill your footsteps, kill your breath
Wall over wall, roof over roof
Caught, it's the cane; caught, it's the end
But I'm still not going home
The night has to be long for me to live
The night has to be long for me to live

Who goes there — (shh)
Where are you going — (shh)
The torches are coming — (hide)

Sulla, sulla — run
Sulla, sulla — hide
Till the paru bell, till the paru bell
stay alive

The noble walls of Bukchon are high
and in the alleys of Namchon even rats lose their way
Fold yourself under the stream bridge
cover your heartbeat with the sound of water
Three torches, three spears, six feet
one, two, three — they pass
Thirty-three strokes until the sky lightens
the bell has to ring before I walk

Shut twenty-eight times
opened thirty-three times
and what lies between — is mine

Sulla, sulla — run
Sulla, sulla — hide
Till the paru bell, till the paru bell
stay alive

Paru — the bell is ringing
Thirty-three times
Open the gates
