Story summary

A woman dies in the palace. Her name is in no record and her grave is unmarked. The king who loved her discovers that the hand which poisoned her belonged to his own court.

From that day he signs his decrees in blood instead of ink. The gentle king became a tyrant.

A scholar named Yun-je submits a petition and is exiled to Jeju. He keeps writing there, and his words cross back to the mainland as the songs of a market clown named Tal-swe.

Jeong-an, a woman who lost her family in a purge and took vows on a mountain, comes down carrying a torch. That night beacons rose on every pass. The uprising did not last half a day.

Yun-je dies at the execution ground. Tal-swe throws away his mask and walks the roads as a storyteller. Jeong-an returns to her mountain empty-handed.

Forty years later, a sixteen-year-old girl named Bun-i finds a sheet of paper beneath the floorboards of her grandmother's room. She cannot read. She sits at the teacher's door for three days asking to be taught.

A generation later, four people are on a small southern island: Su-gyeom, another scholar exiled for writing the truth; Bae-swe, a smuggler who raises a black sail only when the moon hides; Gap-su, an old fisherman the sea has taken everything from; and Ok-i, a diver who lowers her head on land and is master beneath the water.

That summer Ok-i sees a sunken black ship on the northern shoal. And tells no one.

A storm turns the sea floor over. In the middle of it Gap-su speaks quietly to the sea — if you have something to take, take me; and if you have something to give back, give it back now.

The next day Bae-swe finds the bow, and Ok-i brings up a chest. Inside are the names of those who bought false testimony. Only now does Su-gyeom understand that he was not exiled for writing the truth — he was sent to the place where the truth was buried.

Three men raise a white sail and head north. But halfway across, Ok-i stands up — on the mainland, she says, she is a woman with no letters and no name. And she goes into the water without a sound.

The three find Jeong-an on Songni Mountain, and she reads faces where the ledger has only names. At dawn the hermitage door stood open and there was no one inside. What happened after that is in no record.

That winter the north is breached. The Jurchen cross the river and three fortresses fall in three days.

Anchored in a harbour for supplies, Bae-swe hears the news and lowers his sail — the writing has waited ten years, he says, it can wait one more day. The state pardons its criminals and calls on the men who spent their lives running. A blacksmith melts down a temple bell.

And that winter, to Bun-i, now past forty, the ledger from the sea and the war arrive in the same week. She walks north carrying paper and ink — to write the names of the dying on the day they die.

The palace killed the people and the people hated the palace. But what came from the north does not tell them apart. Now both sides stand in the same line.

Bae-swe, who has run all his life, is told to stand still. The man beside him is a king's soldier and he is a pardoned thief, but today they are both just a line. The drum sounds and the line is pushed back, but it does not break — it was not him who held, it was the man beside him.

On the morning after the fighting the king comes to the front. Bae-swe walks out of the line and asks. The king answers, and to the next question he does not. During that silence Bae-swe's hand goes into his coat and comes out empty.

Behind the line, Bun-i writes down the names of the dying. When the paper runs out she writes on cloth, then on wood, and finally on the arms of living men.

And on the day the fighting ends, a sealed decree arrives from the capital. Nobody opens it. Nobody has to open it to know.

They say the war was won. But they ate all the seed last winter, so there is nothing to plant this year.

An old farmer is ploughing a frozen field when his spade catches on something. He thinks it is a stone. It is not a stone. He takes hold of the shoulder and turns it over, and it is his own son. He carries him home. He was light — something you raise for twenty years cannot be that light.

The son lies there forty days and gets up. Inside his coat is a bundle of soaked paper. Bun-i left it with him at the front. Do not ask what it is, she said. He could not read, and because he could not read, he kept it. He buries it in his mother's kitchen, inside the salt jar.

Sixty years later his granddaughter asks — Grandfather, where is that paper? I don't remember, he says.

And five hundred years later, someone digs where that kitchen stood. The salt had not spoiled.
