Mask Dance
달이 뜨면 장터에 북이 울리고, 양반도 종도 탈을 쓴다. 이름을 버리고 해 뜰 때까지 도는 밤 — 탈춤의 자리에서는 누구나 같은 춤을 춘다.
When the moon rises the drums sound in the market and nobleman and servant alike put on masks. Throw away your name and turn until sunrise — on the mask-dance ground everyone dances the same dance.

쌀 한 그릇, 술 한 잔, 마당의 불. 방울이 울고 무당이 칼과 부채를 든다. 신을 불러 몸을 빌려주고, 아픈 사람과 떠난 사람의 이름을 묻는 굿의 밤.
A bowl of rice, a cup of wine, a fire in the yard. The bells ring and the shaman takes up blade and fan. A night of gut: calling the spirit down, lending it a body, asking after the sick and the departed.

Night Patrol
인정 종이 스물여덟 번 울리면 한양의 문이 닫히고, 파루 종이 서른세 번 울릴 때까지 길은 순라군의 것이다. 횃불 사이를 뛰고 숨으며 통금의 밤을 건너는 사람의 노래.
When the injeong bell rings twenty-eight times the gates of Hanyang close, and until the paru bell rings thirty-three times the streets belong to the night patrol. A song for whoever runs and hides between the torches to cross the curfew night.

모래판에 모여라. 샅바를 잡고 안다리, 밖다리, 들배지기 — 동네 아재들은 막걸리를 걸고 아이들은 어깨 위에 앉는다. 오늘 황소는 누구 것인가.
Gather round the sand ring. Grip the satba — inside trip, outside trip, belly lift — the village uncles bet their makgeolli and the children sit on shoulders. Whose is the bull today?

보름달 아래 여자들이 손을 잡고 원을 그린다. 처음엔 천천히, 점점 빠르게. 숨이 차도 손을 놓으면 원이 끊어진다 — 오늘 밤은 아무도 혼자가 아니다.
Under the full moon the women take hands and make a circle. Slowly at first, then faster and faster. Out of breath, but let go and the circle breaks — tonight nobody is alone.

서당의 아침. 훈장이 천자문을 외면 아이들이 따라 외운다. 하늘 천, 땅 지, 검을 현, 누를 황 — 그리고 졸다가 회초리를 맞는 돌쇠. 천자문이 춤을 추는 노래.
Morning at the village school. The teacher chants the Thousand Character Classic and the children chant it back. Heaven cheon, earth ji, black hyeon, yellow hwang — and Dolswe, who dozes off and meets the switch. A song in which the Thousand Characters dance.

기방의 밤. 투호의 화살이 항아리를 빗나가면 네가 마시고, 주령구를 굴려 나온 벌칙은 노래 한 곡에 세 잔 연달아. 달이 기울고 촛불이 짧아져도 술은 아직 남았다.
A night at the gisaeng house. Miss the jar in tuho and you drink; roll the juryeonggu die and the forfeit is a song, or three cups in a row. The moon tilts and the candle burns short, but there is still wine left.
한 잔 — 두 잔 — 세 잔

거지 옷에 찢어진 갓, 아무도 보지 않는 사내가 사또의 잔치 구석에서 장부를 적는다. 품 속에는 마패. 그리고 한마디 — 암행어사 출두요!
Beggar's clothes and a torn hat: a man nobody looks at sits in the corner of the magistrate's feast and writes everything down. Inside his coat, the mapae. And then the cry — the secret inspector has arrived!
