CHAPTER 0 · THE CLOWN

TRACK 1

제자리

In Its Place

Before the mask, he was a nobleman's son learning to write straight and proper at his father's side. One evening he is given official papers to copy: different names, different lives, the same crime.

The ink not too thick
The brush not laid too flat
The sleeve never touching the paper
My father always said
"Straight."

At dawn the gate opened
and people waited for my father
Silk collars
black official hats
low voices
quick steps
I followed behind him
and tried to copy even his walk
The elders of the house laughed
"That boy will hold office soon too."
I liked hearing that
I already believed
I knew
where my place was

One stroke not too long
one stroke not too short
If the ink bleeds, write it again
if a letter leans, write it again
My father said
"Look at the handwriting
and you know the man."

Straight
line it up
Straight
write the name
If it wavers
fix it again
On the paper
everything
finds its place

I memorised people's names
Who was from which house
who stood on whose side
where to say less
and in front of whom to smile first
Nobody taught me
I learned by watching
At the table
on the porch
after the guests had gone
people asked about the house
before they asked the name
That was only natural
I too
had a surname to go home to

One surname
two given names
lined up neatly under the brush tip
My father's
my grandfather's
One day
the place would be mine

That evening
my father brought in some papers
"Copy these as well."
I was glad
I sat up straight
and took the brush to the first page
On the first page
a name I did not know
On the second page
a name I did not know
On the third page
my hand stopped
It was the same
as the sentence before it

First page
Second page
Third page
Only the name was different

They lived in different places
held different posts
were different ages
but the crime written down
did not differ by a single letter
I looked at my father
"Do these men
know each other?"
No answer
After a moment
the brush moved again
I asked once more
"Then how is it
that their crimes are all the same?"

Straight
line it up
Straight
write the name
If it wavers
fix it again
On the paper
On the paper…

My father looked at my page
After a long while
he put a finger
on one wrong letter
"Here."
I wrote it again
My father said
"Good."
"Straight."

TRACK 2

The Same Sentence

A purge reaches the house. His father signs against his oldest friend to protect his family. Then the court turns, constables arrive at night, and the arrest order begins with the same sentence.

From that spring
fewer guests came
The gate closed early
and voices went low

The light in the men's quarters
stayed on late
When my father came home
he sat down without taking off his clothes
Talk of someone summoned
someone who did not come back
someone's gate
sealed shut
I knew those names
All of them
had sat on our porch

One man speaks
another writes it down
and what is written
calls the next man in

Joined hands with traitors
and threw the realm into disorder
The crime is grave
let it be punished severely
Change only the name
and once more

Then that name came up
My father's oldest friend
the man who gave me my first brush
The first to arrive every New Year
to praise my handwriting
Last autumn my father had said
"He is not
a man who would do that."
I remembered those words
I believed
my father remembered them too

That night
I looked through the crack in the door
A sheet of paper in front of my father
The brush hung still
for a long time
then came down
Straight

Straight—
"You said he was innocent,
Father, you said so."
My father washed the brush
The water
clouded black
"Before I am his friend
I am your father."

And truly
it went quiet
The guests came back
the gate opened again
the elders laughed again
Nobody
spoke that name
I did not
speak it either
And so
a year went by

The wind at court turned
The ones pushed out came back
and the ones who came back
carried lists
That night
a pounding on the gate
Torches
constables
footsteps filling the yard
My father dressed properly, went out
and said quietly
"Show me the document."

Joined hands with traitors
and threw the realm into disorder
The crime is grave
let it be punished severely
Change only the name
This time—

Over my father's shoulder
I read the first line
Not a single letter
was different
The handwriting
was straight

TRACK 3

Son of a Traitor

The house is seized, the family scattered. A boy who once copied official papers now carries water in a stranger's house, until drunken guests order him to show them how his father walked.

A paper was pasted
above the gate
The house
now belonged to the state

The books were piled in the yard
The brushes were broken
Somebody carried off the inkstone
My mother's hairpin
my grandfather's scroll
the book with my name in it
One by one
into other people's hands
The family was scattered
My father
did not come back
I was young
so only my life was left to me

남았다
이름도
남았다
그게

Only my life
was left
The name
was left too
And that
was heavier

Son of a traitor
Son of a traitor
Bend your back
Bend your back
Son of a traitor
Son of a traitor
Bow your head
Bow your head
Forget what you learned
It is no use here

Up before dawn
drawing water
splitting firewood
sweeping the yard
My palms cracked
The hands that once held a brush
When someone called
"Yes."
When someone struck
"Yes."
The mouth that once chose its words
now said one word, "Yes"
That I could read
I told no one

Some nights
I hated my father
The hand that set the brush
on that man's name
Some nights
I missed that hand
The hand that pointed out
my wrong letters
Hate and longing
lay down under one blanket

The day that house had guests
the wine went round
and someone pointed at me
"Do you know whose son that is?"
Laughter broke out
"Show us
how your father used to walk."
I stood still
"Can't you?"
A kick came flying

I straightened my back
Lifted my chin a little
smoothed my sleeves
Slowly
one step
and another
Straight—
I did not stop
My father's little cough
the glances of the high officials
the way they called people in a low voice
and in front of the one you must smile at first
how to smile first

(crowd chanting and laughing) 한 번 더!

Son of a traitor
Once more
Son of a traitor
Once more
Once more!

Everyone laughed
I did not laugh
And yet
I had not got
a single thing wrong
I had done it
too well

TRACK 4

Talswe

Sold to a troupe of performers, he is handed the one mask he knows best: the nobleman's face. Behind it, he can finally say everything. And when they ask for his surname, he has none.

The next morning
there was the sound of coins
One
Two
Three
I was worth
exactly that sound

I walked behind the cart
Only the master had changed
the walking was the same
Market to market
dust to dust
They struck the gong
wore masks
walked the tightrope
I did not speak
They did not ask
At night someone
put the gong in my hand
"Hit it."
I hit it wrong
I hit it again
wrong again
How to strike it straight
nobody taught me

The day the first show was set up
someone held out a mask to me
The yangban mask
Smiling eyes
a sagging jaw
a face held high
I knew that face
The face I had grown up looking at
I held it a long while
then put it on
Inside the mask
I heard only my own breath

When the gong rings
the show opens
When the mask goes on
the mouth opens
Laugh
Eolssigu
Laugh
Jota
As long as they are laughing
nobody can catch me

I walked
like my father
Chin up
sleeves shaken out
one little cough
His Excellency is coming
clear the road
In front of the one who must smile first
smile first
Someone shouted
"Once more!"
The same words
as that night
But this time
I decide

Joined hands with traitors—
threw the realm into disorder—
The crime is grave
let it be punished severely!
Write it down
and a man dies
Sing it
and a man laughs

When I was a nobleman's son
I had to choose my words
Say less in front of this one
swallow it in front of that one
With the mask on
there was nothing to hide
The high official's walk
the magistrate's lies
how to erase a man
with one brush
I said it all
They laughed at it all
Nobody
could catch me

When the gong rings
the show opens
When the mask goes on
the mouth opens
Laugh
Eolssigu
Laugh
Jota
As long as they are laughing
nobody can catch me

When the show was over
someone asked
"What is your name?"
I said my name
"And your surname?"
"I have none."
From that day
this is what people called me
Talswe!
Writing has an owner
A song has none
