북두칠성은 자리를 바꾸지 않는다
다른 별이 다 돌아도
그 일곱 개만은 북쪽에 남는다
그래서 뱃사람은 그것만 믿는다

평생 남 몰래 물길을 저었다
오늘은 처음으로 북쪽으로 저어간다
숨기려고 익힌 뱃길이었는데
이제는 드러내려고 그 길을 쓴다
돛을 올린다 검은 돛이 아니라
아무것도 감추지 않은 흰 돛이다
누가 보아도 좋다 오늘은
바람 탓이 아니라 내 탓이다

All my life I rowed water roads in secret

Ten years I lived blaming the sea

나는 그가 못 가진 것을 가졌다

Inside my coat there are two copies
The salt-eaten original and the one I wrote out
One is evidence and one is a life
So that if either is lost, the other remains
Ten years ago a scholar walked this road
He took up his brush and went to the execution ground
I have what he never had
The names of those who killed him are here

그때 그 여자가 일어섰다

That was when she stood up

아무도 그 여자에게 오라 하지 않았다
스스로 배에 올랐다
문서를 건진 손이었으니
끝까지 보고 싶었을 것이다
그런데 반나절을 노를 저은 뒤
그 여자가 뱃머리에 서서
앞이 아니라 뒤를 보고 있었다
멀어지는 섬을 보고 있었다

No one had asked her to come
She climbed aboard on her own
They were the hands that brought the documents up
So she must have wanted to see it through
But after half a day of rowing
She stood at the bow
Looking not forward but back
Watching the island go away

그대들의 싸움은 뭍의 싸움이오
나는 이미 내 싸움을 마쳤소
뼈들을 만났고 이름을 건졌으니
내 몫은 여기까지요

The scholar asked, what is it
She answered, smiling
When I get to the mainland, what am I
A woman with no letters and no name
Here I am the master
There I would have to lower my head
Your fight is a fight of the land
I have already finished mine
I met the bones and I brought up the names
My part ends here

우리 셋을 한 번씩 보았다

아들의 이름을 아는 사람이었으니
선비에게는 아무 말도 하지 않았다
할 말은 이미 다 적혀 있었으니
그리고 물로 들어갔다
소리도 나지 않았다

She set down the float
She left the iron pick behind
Like someone with nothing to take
She retied the ties of her jacket
And looked at the three of us, once each
To the old fisherman she bowed her head
Because she knew his son's name
To the scholar she said nothing
Because everything to say was already written
And then she went into the water
It made no sound

한참 뒤에
멀리서 숨비소리가 한 번 들렸다
살아 있다는 뜻이었다
우리는 다시 노를 잡았다

A long while later
Far off, one breath-whistle was heard
It meant: alive
We took up the oars again

물로 돌아간 여자

우리는 북쪽으로 갔고
그 여자는 아래로 갔다
둘 다 집으로 가는 길이었다

그러나 그 여자는 사라진 것이 아니다
돌아간 것이다

The island disappeared completely

산문 앞에 사내 셋이 서 있었다
바다 냄새가 나는 사람들이었다

Three men stood before the temple gate
They were men who smelled of the sea

뭍에 닿아 산길을 사흘 걸었다
암자 하나 찾으라 하였으니
불을 들고 궁궐 앞에 섰던 여인
이제는 산에서 목탁을 친다 하였다
품에서 젖은 장부를 꺼냈다
소금이 반을 먹은 이름들을
그 여인이 한 장 한 장 넘겼다
그리고 손이 멈췄다

We reached land and walked three days into the mountains
We were told to find a small hermitage
The woman who stood before the palace with a torch
Now strikes a wooden bell on a mountain, they said
I took the soaked ledger from my coat
The names the salt had half eaten
She turned one page, then another
And her hand stopped

이 이름을 아시오

Do you know this name

Know it? Of course
That is the hand that took my father

그 여인이 이름들을 짚어갔다
이 사람은 대비마마 곁에 있었고
이 사람은 아버지 장례에 왔었고
이 사람은 내 손을 잡고 울었소
어릴 적 궁궐에서 다 본 얼굴이오
글은 누가 썼는지 모르나
누가 시켰는지는 내가 아오
장부에는 이름만 있으나
내 안에는 얼굴이 있소

This one came to my father's funeral

They are all faces I saw in the palace as a child
Who wrote it, I do not know
But who ordered it — that I know
The ledger has only names
Inside me there are faces

같이 가시겠소 물었다
그 여인은 한참 말이 없었다
십 년을 산에서 산 사람에게
다시 내려오라 한 것이니

Will you come with us, we asked
She was silent a long while
We were asking a woman who had lived ten years on a mountain
To come down again
